NAIROBI: On 26 February 2019, RECSA hosted a one-day regional workshop, bringing together representatives of government from seven Member States to review the progress made in raising awareness on the need to ratify the Arms Trade Treaty.

The Arms Trade Treaty has a lot of complementarities with the Nairobi Protocol on Small Arms and Light weapons as well as other mechanisms on arms control such as the UN’s Programme of Action (UNPOA) that RECSA Member States ascribe to.

The workshop provided a forum for the government representatives to give an update on the national processes and also deliberate on best practices and recommendations for maintaining the momentum that has been generated to culminate into actual ratifications in the RECSA region.

The national-level sensitization campaigns provided a platform for dialogue between State agencies and civil societies on the provisions, obligations and benefits of ratifying or acceding to the Arms Trade Treaty. They also provided a forum for government agencies to deliberate on the challenges and roadmap towards the ratification of the ATT in their countries. The activities were implemented with funding from the United Nations Facility Supporting Cooperation in Arms Regulation (UNSCAR).

Out of 15 RECSA Member States in the Great Lakes Region, the Horn of Africa and Bordering States, only two (2) have ratified the Treaty (Central African Republic and Seychelles) while five (5) others have signed the Treaty (Burundi, Djibouti, Republic of Congo, Rwanda and United Republic of Tanzania).
