CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC AND BURUNDI SALW COMMISSIONS BENCHMARKING ACTIVITY

BUJUMBURA: A 4-member delegation from the Central African Republic’s National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons (CAR-COMNAT) undertook a week-long benchmarking visit to the Republic of Burundi’s National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons in July 2019.

The Minister of Public Safety and Disaster Management Alain Guillaume Bunyoni received the delegation from RECSA and the Central African Republic, appreciated RECSA’s efforts to recognize and promote best practices and learning across the region. He also reiterated Burundi’s cooperation with RECSA and his support to the CAR delegation.

The President of the Burundi National Commission on SALW CPP Maurice MBONIMPA hosted his counterpart Mr. Pierre Betindji for comparative deliberations on the functioning of the commission as part of capacity-building of the CAR Commission which was established in 2017. CPP Mbonimpa also took his counterpart through the functioning of the Observatory of Armed Violence (OVA) tool which the Burundi NATCOM uses to monitor live reporting of violence across the country and generate reports to support decision making on state interventions.

The visit offered a platform for cross-learning on best practices for the effective and efficient execution of the mandates of national bodies in the management and control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW). RECSA Principal Officer Mr. Dody Sahinguvu facilitated the mission on behalf the Secretariat. The benchmarking exercise is part of ongoing support by the African Development Bank to strengthening regional and national institutions for reduction of proliferation of Small Arms.
