UNODA-RECSA PARTNERSHIP: HIGH REPRESENTATIVE FOR DISARMAMENT HOSTS RECSA EXECUTIVE SECRETARY

NEW YORK: On 27 February 2019, the United Nations High Representative for Disarmament Affairs Ms. Izumi Nakamitsu held bilateral discussions with the RECSA Executive Secretary Lt. Gen. Badreldin Elamin Abdelgadir focusing on the implementation of arms control interventions.

The bilateral meeting coincided with the UN Security Council debate on cooperation between the United Nations, regional and sub-regional organizations on maintenance of international peace and security.

During the bilateral meeting, High Representative Nakamitsu underscored areas for close collaboration between the UN Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA) and RECSA in implementing the UN Secretary-General’s Disarmament Agenda. She also urged RECSA to continue supporting its Member States to strengthen action on the security and management of weapons and ammunition stockpiles (PSSM) as well as curbing the illicit trade in small arms and light weapons.

She also emphasized the Secretary-General’s effort to establish a dedicated facility (SALIENT) to support government action to tackle small arms and light weapons to address armed violence and the diversion of weapons.

On his part, RECSA Executive Secretary Lt. Gen. Abdelgadir elaborated on the priorities of RECSA for 2019 and 2020, including the “Roadmap for Cooperation” RECSA signed with UNODA’s regional centre in Africa (UNREC) in January 2019. The Roadmap seeks to revitalize the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between UNODA and RECSA that was signed in 2009 and which identified possible areas of cooperation and joint activities towards peace, security and disarmament in Africa.
